Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care system that incorporates both modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. This health care system is built on a patient-centred approach that emphasizes prevention, treatment, and optimal health.
Naturopathy or Naturopathic Medicine is a form of alternative medicine complementary to Western Medicine. Naturopathic philosophy favours a holistic approach focusing on addressing the underlying causes of illness and health issues. It combines the science of the disease and the body to develop a treatment regime using naturally occurring medical grade medicines and seeks to find the least invasive solution necessary to promote the body’s natural healing process and restore health, wellness and vitality on all levels of our being – physical, psychological and spiritual.
By integrating conventional medicine and therapies with a range of natural therapies a naturopathic practitioner can treat a patients’ mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.
The foundation of Naturopathy is the ‘healing power of the body’ meaning that the body has its own innate healing energy within. With the assistance of naturopathic medicine and therapies promoting a strong and supportive environment the body can repair itself and recover from illness and injury.
The Role of the Naturopath
Find out what to expect from a consultation
A consultation with a Naturopath typically begins with a lengthy patient interview focusing on lifestyle, medical history (including family medical history), personal history, emotional tone and physical features. A physical examination and blood or urine analysis may also be required to discover the underlying cause and assist in establishing a wellness program.
Naturopaths do not undertake to diagnose or treat a disease but rather concentrate on the whole body wellness in order to facilitate the body healing itself. Lifestyle changes and approaches to support the body’s healing ability will be focused on. A naturopath will educate, empower and motivate a patient to adopt a healthy lifestyle, attitude and diet. A naturopath will not treat the symptoms of an illness or disease but rather search for the cause and treat that. Illness does not occur without cause. Underlying causes of disease must be discovered and removed or treated before a person can recover from an illness. Symptoms are only expressions of a body’s attempt to heal but not the cause of the disease. Causes can occur on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.
Naturopathic health care is suitable chronic and acute health issues across all age groups and should always be used in conjunction with ongoing medical care where possible.
